Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering may commoditize routine project management tasks, such as scheduling and reporting, by automating them. However, it can also help PMs differentiate themselves by leveraging AI for advanced decision-making, optimizing workflows, and focusing on complex, strategic aspects of projects that require human oversight. PMs who master AI tools and excel in leadership, innovation, and stakeholder management will command higher value, positioning themselves as indispensable in managing large, complex, or transformative initiatives. Adaptability will be key to avoiding commoditization.
To me it is for sure the second one, thus "it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value". PMs can do a better and more efficient work with AI, but they are still for sure needed, and they are, very important, accountable of the results. Ai is as has been said earlier, just another assistant, helping the PM to do a good job, but for sure not replacing the PM. Though some tasks might become commodities as you put it, but that is only good, because like that the PM can use more of his/her limited time to lead and manage the project.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
The key to effective use of any GenAI tool is effective prompting. Effective prompting is differentiating and requires building new skills for PM's and Analysts in the ways we work. The art of asking questions becomes a skill with effective prompt engineering and that skill sets PMs apart from others who do not engage GenAI. GenAI adoption requires conscious effort and a mindset to "use it everyday for every task".

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
completely agree!!!

I think that prompt engineering will allow Project Managers (PM) to work more efficiently and effectively; it will also provide opportunities for PMs to be more creative. These factors will add more value to the Project Manager.

I'm shure that the adoption of prompt engineering is inevitable. I'm almost finishing my postgraduate in project management and I can ensure that about in 70% of the course we're using GenAI and Prompt Engineering.

As in the past we exchanged drawings boards for drawings softwares, now we've to use Prompts Engineering in our routine as Project Manager.

In the past, all Engineers have to change the drawings boards for drawings softwares. From now on all Project Managers will've to work using Prompt Engineering.

As with any new tools (think of industrial revolution) those who accept and adopt AI and learn how to use it efficiently will move ahead of those who ignores or even fights the existance it.

I believe that prompt engineering will definitely be a differentiator because the more effective you are with communicating with LLMs, the better you will perform as a project manager which in turn could make someone more valuable.
