Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Gen AI significantly enhances the project level of detail; the ability to professionally present in a clear, concise, and (when validated) correct manner. PMs need to ensure they put forth effort to validate. More importantly, they must consider the human experience - are the users understanding what the implementation means for them? Are leaders well-informed, and is buy-in continuous? Was scope creep mitigated, because AI results illustrated the art of the possible? Critical thinking is key.

This only tells us that the human factor(PM) cannot be eliminated for a reliable project result
Definitely the adoption of prompt engineering will give more value in project management. Also, with the widespread of AI, all Project Managers and companies will see its value and will be eager to learn more about this world trend. That at the end of the day will help the Project Management community worldwide be more efficient when developing projects.
While incorporating prompt engineering will add value in the areas of automation, data mining, task management, etc., this would allow project managers to shift focus and concentrate on enhancing key soft skills that lead to a more strategic focus on business needs. Saving Changes...

Taking into consideration that AI only knows what is thought, I do not see a cause for concern. There may be brilliant minds contributing to AI; however, there are always limitations to the knowledge and the need for others to complete or complement it as a result of their professional and personal experiences. I strongly believe adoption of Gen AI will further improve the working structure of Project managers. Combining the human aspect and experience with the speed and correct output from AI will further improve output from project managers. Saving Changes...

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering has the potential to both commoditize and enhance project management (PM) skills. On one hand, as prompt engineering becomes more accessible and automates certain aspects of project management, the basic tasks traditionally handled by PMs may become commoditized. However, skilled PMs who leverage prompt engineering effectively can differentiate themselves by enhancing their strategic decision-making, improving efficiency, and offering more personalized, high-value insights and solutions. This can help them command higher value, as their ability to integrate advanced AI tools and methodologies will be increasingly sought after in complex, dynamic project environments.

I believe the use of AI is certainly going to streamline the Project Managment process across the world. Here at PMI we learn various concepts related to Project Managment and try to implement them in the practical world. However, as time passes, we may not retain all the good practices. AI will help to provide information to the Project manager which is aligned with the latest trends and practices followed by Global Project Management community. This will sharpen the skills of Project Managers and help concentrate on the value addition towards the world. Saving Changes...

Hi,
from my point of view prompt engineering needs to be an added value that will help PMs on their skills needs to be an increase on the PM skills.
There are other soft skills prompt enginering will not be there to help, and need to be managed by the PM on their own.
