Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
We believed for sometime now that AI would disrupt our way of working and many of us would have contributed to the delivery of these very same technologies. With that, now we can leverage same to deliver greater value and focus more on the human interactions which will see greater collaboration and efficiency amongst teams. Saving Changes...
Gen AI significantly enhances the project level of detail; the ability to professionally present in a clear, concise, and (when validated) correct manner. PMs need to ensure they put forth effort to validate. More importantly, they must consider the human experience - are the users understanding what the implementation means for them? Are leaders well-informed, and is buy-in continuous? Was scope creep mitigated, because AI results illustrated the art of the possible? Critical thinking is key.
The better result prompt upon a clear clarification in the area of character, request, examples, adjustments, Type of output and Evaluation. Saving Changes...
Definitely the adoption of prompt engineering will give more value in project management. Also, with the widespread of AI, all Project Managers and companies will see its value and will be eager to learn more about this world trend. That at the end of the day will help the Project Management community worldwide be more efficient when developing projects.

Generative AI should be used as a tool to free PMs from the mundane tasks so that they can focus on implementation, people leadership, issue resolution and strategy (complexities that only human input can manage). Generative AI cannot replace PMs. PMs must adapt to the new technologies to remain relevant and effective. Adapt (or in this case adopt) or become redundant. Saving Changes...
Hi Sarah, thank you for sparking such an important conversation! As a Project Director, I’ve seen how technology like GenAI can streamline processes, reduce repetitive tasks, and bring valuable data-driven insights, enabling PMs to focus more on high-level strategic decisions.
However, I believe the key lies in how PMs use these tools. GenAI and prompt engineering can automate the “how,” but the “why”—the strategic insights, human touch, and adaptability we bring—will continue to differentiate us. PMs who leverage GenAI thoughtfully can enhance their decision-making, demonstrate unique value, and command higher recognition. In essence, it’s not the technology that commoditizes skills but rather the lack of adaptability and innovation in using it.
Looking forward to discussing this further with the community!

As with any new technology that comes to play, I believe the use of prompt engineerng will deepen our need and understanding of IA in our profession. It will not replace, at least in my view, in the next 5 years, the judgement and experience a PM may have acquired through experience. I don´t think prompt engineering will comoditize PM skills, it is and will be a tooll to expedite, optimize the way we perform our duties as PMs. Saving Changes...
