Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The advent of prompt engineering brings both challenges and opportunities for project managers. While automation and standardization may replace routine tasks, human expertise remains essential for strategic planning, complex problem-solving, and stakeholder management.

To thrive, project managers should develop skills like business acumen, strategic thinking, and innovation, focusing on high-level tasks such as portfolio management and resource optimization. By embracing prompt engineering and adapting to its capabilities, project managers can differentiate themselves, increase their value, and position themselves as strategic partners driving business growth.

while the widespread adoption of GenAI may commoditize certain routine aspects of project management, it also provides an opportunity for PMs to differentiate themselves by focusing on strategic, creative, and human-centric aspects of their roles. Those who can effectively blend AI capabilities with their unique skills will command higher value in the market.

Indeed, advanced AI tools can very well change the field of project management. First, such tools could bring some of the standardizability to certain skills, such as task generation or risk assessment, that would otherwise be left to routine (project) tasks. Despite these, there is nevertheless an ongoing need for some core project management qualities like strategic decision making, cross functional leadership, and navigating complex stakeholder relationships, all of which are grounded in human experience and wisdom.

The opportunity for an experienced PM is that we can apply AI to essentially increased efficiency and focused on the important stuff. With AI driven insights in play, the PM can focus more on strategy, innovation and teams performance optimization using data analysis and repetitive tasks. In fact, these tools help raise our value, not diminish it. It allows us to use the technology in ways that create better, more agile project outcomes. Combining project management acumen and AI provides the advantage of being innovators and leaders using the combination to drive projects, to be different and offer more value in our role.

Prompt engineering is a vital skill for project managers in the age of AI. It not only enhances their ability to manage projects effectively but also ensures that AI tools are used to their full potential. While AI can automate certain tasks, it does not pose a threat to project managers. Instead, it complements their roles by providing tools that can handle repetitive tasks, allowing project managers to focus on more strategic aspects of their projects. The role of project management becomes even more important as AI capabilities are integrated into projects, ensuring that human oversight and decision-making remain central to project success.

I agree with the opinion that AI won't replace Project Managers, but rather empower them. We need to apply the main PM Principles to this technology - Adapt and be able to change and adjust.

Leveraging AI certainly will provide many advantages, but where does the PM begin and AI end. With the speed and efficiency AI provides, will there be a day the PM role is extinct like many other roles in the in the workforce?
