Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

I see it as an assistant in a human + machine team. Fo me it depends on how you use it. Practicing and investing in this "relationship" will give you differentiation, paying attention to the developments on the tools. On the other hand you can use it only on urgent needs or copy what others are doing, in a more commodity-wow. Saving Changes...
Prompt engineering should allow PMs to more quickly explore research sources which may help improve their tasks at hand, like creating a work schedule given proper imputs. Saving Changes...
I see it is a tool to add to my toolbox. Leverage it to help save time or provide additional inputs and insights. In the end a fool with a tool, is still a fool. Saving Changes...

As AI and prompt engineering become more widespread, some may worry that project management skills will become commoditized. However, I believe this technology will ultimately highlight the value of experienced PMs. While AI can assist with routine tasks, it cannot replace the strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and nuanced decision-making that seasoned PMs bring. Research shows that AI enhances, rather than replaces, human expertise, making certified PMs even more indispensable. Saving Changes...
Like the world wide web there will eventually be widespread adoption of AI. Prompt engineering will play a crucial role in this new world order. There will be positive and negative outcomes for the project manager. However, I see a coming niche for the creative AI-skilled project manager. Certainly, some skills and tasks will be commoditized, but creativity cannot be commoditized. It will always differentiate. Perhaps, creativity & innovation in prompt engineering is a skill that will keep the project manager relevant. Saving Changes...

Its still a work in progress. My org has ethics exposure, so definitely not something beyond an initial draft. Maybe once it matures. Saving Changes...
I think both of them, commoditized and PM shall differentiate themselves project management skills, however the widespread adoption of prompt engineering can depending on how it's utilized. Saving Changes...

The widespread adoption of GenAI and prompt engineering could both commoditize and differentiate project management skills. While automation of routine tasks may reduce the uniqueness of basic PM functions, skilled professionals who master AI integration and focus on value generation can differentiate themselves. By leveraging AI for tailored insights, creative problem-solving, and digital transformation leadership, PMs can command higher value, ensuring their relevance in an increasingly tech-driven landscape.
