Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering can enhance a PM’s capabilities, leading to more efficient, effective, and innovative project management. By leveraging AI to improve decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and process management, PMs can differentiate themselves in the industry and command higher value in their roles.

AI should be viewed as a powerful tool, and prompt engineering is the method of utilizing this tool to achieve the desired outcomes for your audience. By leveraging AI, project managers can access a broader range of options to address problems or situations, enhancing their ability to innovate and add value. While there is a risk of commoditization with widespread adoption, those who master prompt engineering can differentiate themselves by delivering more customized and efficient solutions. Ultimately, it is the user's responsibility to apply AI ethically and strategically, ensuring they stand out and command higher value in their roles.

I see prompt engineering as a tool that can streamline tasks, but what really sets PMs apart is their ability to use it strategically. It's about leveraging AI not just to manage projects efficiently, but to foresee challenges, innovate solutions, and create real value for stakeholders. That's where the true differentiation lies.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
Completely agree to what you said.

As per my opinion, Projects are not being delivered by only producing reports, data or documents. Managing projects is much more than that. Soft skills, Decision making skills, client management skills, Leadership, stakeholder management, communications and many more skills are required for the success of project. GenAI will help PM in documentation and suggestions. This will definitely help PM to differentiate themselves but GenAI can never replace or commoditize PM role.

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management to those who have a good capacity to adapt in this disruptive world.
Totally agree!

I use the analogy to answer that question: Does Excel eliminate the need for financial analysts? So, currently, Strong AI is just a tool, and prompt engineering provides an operating manual to use safely and efficiently. But Super AI in the future will be game-changing when equipped with self-conscious ability.

I believe that we have more to win than to loose with the AI and prompt engineering.
AI is a powerful tool that is already changing the way of working of several different professions nowadays, and yes, it will replace some people in their jobs, but the ones that don´t know how to use this powerful tool properly to support them in their projects & process in their jobs.
That said, we need to keep learning more and more about how to use this tool to enhance our way of work in order to keep or improve the results that our projects generates to the business.
