Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
For the immediate future, AI will serve as a valuable assistant to, but not replace, the PM.

Agree. Adoption of prompt engineering will augment the PM role by assisting with many of the basic/general tasks that can be commoditized. It will actually free up PMs to focus on activities such as strategy, decision making, risk management, team and stakeholder management, enabling PMs to command higher value.

AI being LLM, I consider it as an executive secretary... Obviously easier part of project management (skills per se) be worked out through AI, leaving PMs to concentrate on next level pondering on adding higher value in the eco system, which otherwise becomes impossible in complex projects. The widespread adoption of prompt engineering is more likely to help project managers (PMs) differentiate themselves and command higher value, rather than commoditize their skills. Here's why:
How Prompt Engineering Can Add Value for PMs:
Enhanced Efficiency and Decision-Making
PMs skilled in prompt engineering can use AI to analyze data, generate insights, and streamline workflows faster than their peers. This enables them to focus on strategic decision-making and higher-value tasks.
Improved Communication
Creating effective AI prompts requires clarity and precision—skills that directly translate to better stakeholder communication and documentation, critical aspects of project management.
Greater Strategic Focus
By automating routine tasks through AI-powered tools, PMs can spend more time on strategic planning, stakeholder alignment, and driving business outcomes.
Augmented Problem-Solving
Prompt engineering enables PMs to ask the right questions and leverage AI to simulate scenarios, identify risks, or brainstorm solutions, enhancing their problem-solving capabilities.
Differentiation vs. Commoditization
Differentiation: PMs who understand both the nuances of project management and how to leverage prompt engineering will stand out. They can demonstrate mastery of modern tools while maintaining core leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Commoditization: While AI tools can handle many technical tasks, they cannot replace the interpersonal, strategic, and judgment-based skills that PMs bring to the table. AI acts as a supplement, not a substitute.
In essence, PMs who embrace prompt engineering and integrate it with their existing expertise will be seen as innovative and forward-thinking, commanding higher value in the job market.

In my opinion Generative AI complements the work of Project Manager. AI helps to optimize the different types of task and in turn to some extent the productivity and time to focus on key issues and the successful completion of Projects Saving Changes...
In my opinion, for sure, it is going to help PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value, rather than commoditizing project management skills. The thing is that the more you learn and practice about prompt eng. the better you differentiate as a PM from the others. At the end, it is just a tool (either called genAl or prompt eng.) and chance for you to improve yourself, so it is not just only usage of the tool, it is about knowing the limitations, rules, and ways (formulas etc.) of using the tool which helps you differantiate in the field. So, let me say this. Since the objectives for the project are clearly stated in the initial declarations by the client, asking generative AI to intervene may be unproductive and may potentially confuse the PM.
For a new project manager coming into the practice, most mature project management organizations often provide training through their PMO (Project Management Organization) department. Additionally, you had a project LEAD who mentored you until you are considered ready to run a project.
In my days with the Hewlett Packard Co., sound training was provided before I was considered ready to run solo.
Yes, I think genAI could be helpful in researching issues pertaining to Resources and Risk management for a particular project.
Mature project management organization - HP, IBM, MS. have built vast archives of 'Lessoned learned' over the years.

The rise of prompt engineering certainly introduces new dynamics in project management, but rather than commoditizing our skills, it offers a unique opportunity for differentiation and growth.
As project managers, our core value has always been in our ability to facilitate communication, align stakeholders, and navigate complexities—skills that are inherently human.
Prompt engineering can enhance our capabilities by streamlining processes, improving data analysis, and fostering better collaboration. It allows us to automate routine tasks and focus on strategic decision-making and relationship building, which are critical in any successful project.
But, the human aspect of project management—empathy, leadership, and conflict resolution—cannot be replicated by machines. As we integrate prompt engineering into our workflows, those who adapt and enhance their soft skills alongside technical know-how will stand out.
This blend of expertise can command higher value in the marketplace.
In essence, while technology evolves, the heart of project management remains firmly rooted in human connection and understanding. Saving Changes...

Hi Sarah!
Great topic! Prompt engineering could both commoditize some project management tasks and offer PMs a chance to differentiate themselves. Those who master these tools can enhance decision-making and streamline processes, showcasing their value in a tech-driven landscape. I am excited to hear more perspectives!
