Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
The roles will not be eliminated. What will happen is that these roles now have new tools based on AI. As a PM, today we use our PMIS, with AI, we now have new tools with AI and prompt engineering. We will become more effective. In addition, what has not been discussed is that our PMIS will become smarter and more automated. I use Monday.com, and it is already incorporating AI features. This will make PMs even more effective.

AI is a great timesaver, but it won't replace the soft skills and leadership that a talented PM can bring. The value of the results from AI are dependent on the PM's ability to provide the right prompts based on well thought out strategies.
Prompt Engineering and AI s a tool like any other Tool (P6, Autocad etc) which will increase the Productivity and enhance the skills if used effectively.

As PMI-certified professionals manage projects defferently, even if identical generative AI and prompt engineering are used, the results will vary based on the user. Those who use AI effectively gain time, which can be a source of differentiation.

If there are "commoditized" projects, where in routine, stable teams and systems generate seriously and properly report in time, AI might even replace human project managers in certain cases.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering is likely to both commoditize certain aspects of project management and create opportunities for differentiation. Project managers who embrace this technology, enhance their strategic focus, and continuously develop their skills will be well-positioned to command higher value in the marketplace.

By understanding how to harness AI to complement and augment their expertise, PMs can transform potential commoditization into a chance for professional growth and differentiation.

GenAI can be an excellent tool to assist every professional in any field with regulations, if we set the correct limitations and adjustments to any prompt and any AI can be an amazing ally to become more productive on our tasks

Thank you Sarah for opening this for discussion. Gen AI still needs expert judgment to validate the output because LLMs can sometimes produce incorrect data. I firmly believe in science's role in making life much easier and especially in saving time and effort. With that in mind, Gen AI will not necessairly replace project manager roles but will aid in optimizing output and adding value to project managers.

In my opinion, learning AI adds significant value to project management. While understanding how to create prompts is essential, the way each individual thinks and interacts with AI can produce unique and diverse results. The conversational dynamics with AI tools often lead to innovative ideas and tailored solutions, enhancing project outcomes.

Let’s also agree on the critical role of problem-solving and critical thinking in our work as project managers. These skills are fundamental to the success of any project, and incorporating AI can amplify our ability to analyze challenges, explore options, and make informed decisions effectively.
