Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I believe that the AI like Infinity must elevate the potential of the PM. Using in the right way we can find opportunities to improve our projects, enhancing the success probability

In my view, early adopters will have a clear differentiator in correct use, which will drive engineering; however, as PMs use it en masse and AI evolves further, it will be less clear what the future might look like for the industry.

Widespread adoption will help PMs differentiate their skillsets more so than commoditizing them. GenAI is a tool for PMs to use, it is not a substitute for the PM him/herself. The PM who can effectively leverage GenAI for their benefit of themselves, the organization, and the project will differentiate themselves, not commoditize themselves.

I believe the adaptation of prompt engineering will increase the value and skills that an experience Project Manager brings to the table. Experienced Project, Portfolio, and Programs managers will need to consistently improve their knowledge, skills, and experiences to provide value to their teams and stakeholders

Joining professional communities and forums where prompt engineering is discussed can provide valuable insights and peer support. Networking with other PMs who are also learning these skills can be beneficial.

AI is revolutionizing engineering and IT by improving efficiency, driving innovation, and enhancing decision-making capabilities. It empowers professionals in these fields to tackle complex challenges, automate mundane tasks, and optimize operations. The integration of AI into these sectors continues to create new opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitiveness, making it a cornerstone of modern engineering and IT advancements.

I think prompt engineering is another poweful and useful tool that will help to improve the data management, but for now (so far)..., nothing can replace human experience to take decisions based on many other layers rather than pure data analysis

With this emerging technology of using Generative AI in various disciplines specifically in Project Management, it will commoditize PM skills and differentiate PM as well, given the fluency of one to use an AI platform and come up with appealing output to the audience. Anyway, I am a novice into this journey and so eager to learn more.
