Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I do not believe AI will replace the need for PMs since LLMs are only as good as the input going into them. Experienced PMs can use LLMs as a way to enhance how they deploy the various PM tools in our arsenal with greater speed and flexibility

Originally, I was quite concerned that GenAI would in fact commoditize project management skills. However, with continued education like such, I'm learning how it can increase the value of of PMs and help to increase efficiency and function at a higher skill set. I am believing that GenAI can further differentiate PMs, and I still believe it can never fully replace a PM. Only supplement!

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for raising this important question. GenAI and prompt engineering represent transformative tools for project managers. They enable us to distinguish ourselves by enhancing productivity, streamlining workflows, and delivering high-value outcomes. By leveraging these technologies effectively, project managers can drive innovation, make more informed decisions, and exceed stakeholder expectations.

I believe embracing these advancements is key to staying competitive and achieving excellence in project management.

Hi Sarah, how can the adoption be relatively effective outside project management and in other areas, such as project schedule integration with complex schedule cycles and generating high-level summary report interpretation for project managers and stakeholders?

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering could both commoditize and elevate project management skills, depending on how professionals adapt. On one hand, it automates repetitive tasks like scheduling and reporting, potentially lowering the value of basic PM skills. However, it also offers a chance for PMs to stand out by mastering AI tools to gain insights, streamline workflows, and enhance decision-making. Those who can craft effective prompts and integrate AI into broader strategies can focus on higher-value activities like stakeholder engagement, risk management, and strategic alignment. This shift allows PMs to differentiate themselves and command greater value in an increasingly AI-driven landscape.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering will set apart Project Managers who embrace it, enabling them to deliver higher value and command greater recognition. There remains a significant need for human intervention to prevent hallucinated responses from being adopted as valid outputs. Therefore, I do not believe the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will lead to the commoditization of project management skills.

I think this fear, and its potential to become a reality, are present in almost every field of human activity. The bottom line is that any repetitive activity can and will be replaced by a machine.
On the other hand, it represents a growing opportunity for decision makers, PMs included, to do a better job where human attributes are needed. The difference is based on the mind frame of the human actor. What do we want, to ease our job, or to improve its results and impact?
