Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

In summary, while rapid engineering could transform certain aspects of project management, it will not necessarily turn all management skills into commodities. Instead, it could free project managers to focus on more strategic, human, and innovative aspects of the work, providing them with the opportunity to differentiate themselves and add value. The key will be how project managers leverage these tools to enhance their leadership, decision-making, and stakeholder relationship management skills.

I think any technology that can automate parts of the project management chain can commoditize project management skills once it becomes commonplace. GenAI could be the most powerful such technology that we have seen yet, at least in the recent past. That said, there will always be room to use it as an enabler for managing more complex tasks, e.g., tasks that involve more human to human interaction. We are only scratching the surface of how it can be used and for the foreseeable future, I think it can help differentiate Project Managers if they are open to embracing it and experimenting with it. More than prompt engineering, it will be about being creative in identifying new use cases that GenAI could solve.
The key is to learn how to take advantage of the tools and use them to improve your work
I agree with several opinions stated above that AI or prompt engineering is still far away from replacing a human in any area of our lives. However, with any tool, technology, piece of information the intention of the users/consumers/promoters of such a tool is more important and will decide if the tool will replace humans or enable them to complete mundane and laborous tasks and free up space for creative thinking.
In the end, venom harvested from an animal can be used to make an antidote to cure the people or to harm them.

Prompt engineering won't commoditize PM skills—it will evolve them. PMs who embrace this shift, stay curious, and refine their ability to integrate Prompt Engineering skills and AI effectively will position themselves as indispensable leaders in the AI-enabled project landscape, commanding higher value and recognition.

If AI is used properly it can help PM's differentiate themselves and add value to a project or organization. Experience of the PM will be essential to making sure that the output of Gen AI is relevant and applicable. In addition, while AI has the potential to produce certain documentation, it still needs an operator to guide to produce and verify its outputs are usable for the case in question.

Like in an other sector AI integration of GenAI will be unavoidable. The role of Project Managers will be elevated by the correct use of AI to improve the efficiency and free the time of the Project Managers to be involved in decision making and the strategic direction of their organisations. Therefore GenAI needs to be viewed as an enabler.

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I agree with you and I think we have to re-define the role as project manager.
