Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Adoption of GenAI and prompt engineering will definitely benefit the project manager to streamline the project management processes and made more informed decisions.

To my very brief experience, I feel prompt engineering and AI tools mainly assists PMs in automation and processing of some of the tasks. This I think is great opportunity for PMs to focus on strategic issues as well as key tasks with greater value. Getting quality outputs using prompt engineering much depends on the quality of inputs. Among other things, PMs role and skills and knowledge in project management in this regard I guess makes difference to quality of inputs we process using prompt engineering in terms of usage of appropriate terms and concepts, knowledge of specific processes and techniques in project management including evaluation and interpretation of outputs.

I agree with the statements above that AI won't replace Project Managers. While AI can be extremely useful and efficient in creating documentation and analysis of data, it cannot run the project. Running the project requires a human who understands the constraints, goals, political landscape, relationship between people and task, and other nuances that AI isn't capable of discerning.

GenAI is a great tool and the adoption of GenAI will make a significant difference across all fields, I'm using it to generate reports or finish a daily routine thing, but i still believe that there is nothing can compete with the human brain.



That is why we still teaching GenAI tools what do, while we learn more and faster.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering has the potential to influence project management (PM) skills in significant ways. Whether it commoditizes or enhances the value of project managers (PMs) depends largely on how PMs adapt and leverage these technologies.


Commoditization of PM Skills

Prompt engineering and AI tools can automate or simplify many tasks traditionally performed by PMs, such as:


Generating project plans: AI can quickly create detailed project roadmaps, timelines, and task lists.
Stakeholder communication: AI can draft updates, emails, and presentations tailored to different audiences.
Risk assessment and issue tracking: AI can identify potential risks and suggest mitigation strategies.
Monitoring and reporting: AI can generate real-time progress reports and highlight deviations.

This automation may reduce the demand for PMs who primarily focus on administrative or procedural tasks, potentially commoditizing lower-skill roles in project management.


Differentiation and Higher Value

Conversely, prompt engineering offers opportunities for PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value if they embrace these tools strategically:


Enhanced Decision-Making: PMs who use AI to process large datasets, predict outcomes, and model scenarios can deliver better insights to stakeholders.
Focus on Strategic Work: By automating routine tasks, PMs can devote more time to strategic responsibilities, such as aligning projects with organizational goals, fostering collaboration, and managing complex stakeholder relationships.
Improved Communication: AI-powered tools can enhance how PMs tailor messages, ensuring clarity and impact across diverse teams and cultures.
Upskilling in AI Fluency: PMs who understand prompt engineering and its applications can act as bridges between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring tools are used effectively and ethically.

Prompt engineering is unlikely to fully commoditize project management skills because the human aspects of leadership, strategic vision, and stakeholder management cannot be easily replicated by AI. Instead, it offers a way for PMs to differentiate themselves, delivering more strategic value and commanding higher compensation if they adapt effectively. Like with any new technology adoption, project managers who are early adopters will reap additional benefits and efficiencies that can set them apart early on. However, as the technology matures and becomes more commonplace in our profession, the differentiation will be less so to the point of being as fundamental as using a computer. What will truly differentiate a project manager with prompt engineering, regardless, is their ability to apply critical thinking skills and experience to get the maximum applicable value out of its potential.

Sarah, after listening to Prompt Engineering 07232024, RTF V CREATE, I can say we are comparing fast food v wholesome food. Those who are in rush and need quick answers go for RTF. Those who are detailed oriented and have sufficient time to give inputs with thought clarity can get good healthy outputs. (Basically, Garbage in / Garbage out).

In my opinion, applied correctly (Ethical, Secure, Compliant), generative AI could be a great tool to improve project team productivity, but it could not replace skills such as critical judgment, strategic focus, and mainly stakeholder management, key in project/program/portfolio management.
