Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The saved time and accuracy in response totally helps the project move forward. PM's have multi tasks to take care of so use of AI will not make them irrelevant but enables them to handle the projects better!

Most people tend to rely on generative AI for every answers, but they need to make sure that they should study about its algorithm and formula to get better answers.!

With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
"Dead" in the way they were originally defined - Yes. "Dead" as in going away - No.

While widespread adoption of prompt engineering could potentially commoditize some basic project management tasks by automating them, it is more likely to help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value by enabling them to focus on more strategic, complex problem-solving, and leverage AI to enhance their decision-making and project execution capabilities.

I believe that by using this tool it will enhance and save time. I used to be constrained by just what i carried with me in my toolbag. Now we all have access to years and years of experience to be tapped into by experienced PM's. This will do nothing but enhance good PM's to do even better if they use the tools properly.

The fact that prompt engineering does not stop human from thinking and perform oversight function but promotes efficiency and effectiveness of a project manager is highly commendable.

I don`t think Gen AI and prompt engineering can fully replace PMs due the various complexities of certain projects that require the human element. Gen AI should be viewed as a technological enhancement in managing projects and not as replacement technology in the future. PMs should look to incorporate Gen AI in their projects which can provide the differentiation factor we seek as PMs.

PMs working with digital agents shall help elevate the knowledge area and anticipate potential risks and mitigate early. Though some aspects of PM's skills may be automated but the human instincts will be hard to replace. I think the job of PM may broaden.

It will differentiate, as LLM outputs have a specific tone and cadence, it will be obvious when there is actual project management knowledge put to the many tables - you still have to think through the appropriate prompts and have the necessary checks in place to make use of this tool.
