Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Prompt engineering won’t commoditize project management, it’ll redefine it. PMs who embrace AI will unlock higher efficiency and focus on strategic leadership, making them even more valuable. Adapt or fade; the choice is clear. Saving Changes...
Generative AI would not replace the Project Manager role but will change the way to approach and manage the tasks required for the position. Generative AI is a new powerful tool to perform several time consuming tasks but the project manager oversight will be required at all times. Saving Changes...

I believe that learning, fine-tuning, and using prompt engineering skills can help PMs and project team members to differentiate themselves and add value to their projects/outcomes. Every project is unique and there's a lot of room for specificity and creativity in using AI as a working partner to add depth and breadth to analytical work/outputs, increase productivity, and nudge the team to be more thorough and apply critical thinking skills to benefit their projects/stakeholders. I strongly believe the Prompt Engineerig will give value in Project Management and help in the turnaround time for many of the common task which takes a longer time based on the various project situations.
However, some of the key concerns will be on Regulated Enviroment like Healthcare and Defence sectors for example. It is critical to have proper ethical and security process to avoid exposing the data to the whole world which can have serious consequences. Saving Changes...
In my opinion, some basic skills the project manager does could have a transformation as commodities, e.g.: creating schedules, reports, presentations, etc. However, if you are a PM with experience in your industry, strategic vision, technical knowledge, adaptability and communication skills, these powerful skills will be taken to another level with the help of AI Gen, and early adoption of prompt engineering. AI can help us develop routine activities and development scenarios in the project, however, it does not replace the project manager, face-to-face communication with clients is important and also making firm decisions in case of risk. Saving Changes...

An interesting topic!
While generative AI may change the landscape of project management and commoditize traditional skills, the impact will ultimately depend on how project managers adapt and integrate these tools into their workflows. Those who leverage prompt engineering to enhance their capabilities and focus on strategic, interpersonal, and leadership skills, along with other soft skills including emotional intelligence, are likely to differentiate themselves and maintain or increase their value in the job market. AI can act as enabling tool. DI Tools/ Chatbots help in simplifying my day to day jobs. In my humble opinion, we are yet to go deep and explore the endless possibilities that AI holds in adding more value to our works. That being said, I, still hold the view that AI can act as differentiator to a PM if used wisely and carefully with proper "feedback" system. PM role will be of great importance in taking the AI use forward and use it to further add value to his/ her job. Saving Changes...
The question we have to ask is the timeline of prompt engineering commoditizing project management skills. Do we have enough out there to successfully help project managers to do more than summarize meeting notes? Project Managers should be actively thinking of ways to incorporate prompt engineering into their everyday task. Think about this as a tool like Google Search or a Calculator. We also need to gage where project managers are in different industries and how efficient (or not) they are in successfully using prompt engineering. Saving Changes...
