Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

The adoption of prompt engineering in project management is a faster instrument to do the work, it will help project managers accomplish heavy repetitive tasks in a matter of seconds, and it surely adds value to PMs and can be used to differentiate them, it should be added to the PM power skills.

Hi Sarah,
Yes I believe adoption of prompt engineering can create a considerable impact on modern day project management where you have to continuously make transition according to dynamic market trends and customer needs.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering will not commoditize project management skills; rather, it can help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value. By leveraging prompt engineering, PMs can streamline workflows, enhance decision-making, and optimize resource allocation. This ability to integrate advanced tools and techniques will position PMs as invaluable assets, driving project success and innovation.

I believe advanced prompt engineering will commoditize many of the traditional and redundant PM tasks-- reporting, scheduling, estimating tasks, EV/BV calculations, etc. For this reason, the prompt-savvy PM will level up significantly in responsibility and demand… especially if she/he has a prowess for identifying gaps where (and when) prompt engineering/AI outputs are most needed.

What do you feel are the key skills and duties that PM's will need as we move into the world of AI? What will we be doing?

I think it will generate both situations. It will allow more marketing as well as improve the skills of project managers. Independent of these results and their proportion, they will generate additional value since it will allow the MP to improve his time and the result of his work.

I believe that the role of the project manager has already been transformed and those who fail to complement the use of AI as another capability are condemned to be left behind.

The thing is if you are willing to embrace this technology. My take on this one is to learn how to create value by using this tool to be more productive, giving focus to what matters. Adopting a negative reaction to AI is not the answer, in these times we are forced to move along with new technologies.

The values in command offered by these innovations to the project manager cannot be overemphasized. However, there is need for continuous learning and improvement to remain sustainably relevant always.

The mechanical aspects of project management were close to being commoditized already: templates exist for most regular project documents, most project organisations highly standardise the document content and reports are generated automatically from scheduling and accounting systems.

The art of communicating, and particularly influencing have always been the key performance tool of the project manager, and these remain in the human domain.
