Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Gen AI will automate routine project management tasks but will elevate the value of strategic leadership. While documentation and reporting may become commoditized, skills like stakeholder management, decision-making, and problem-solving remain irreplaceable.Project managers can integrate AI while excelling in leadership.Mastering AI-driven workflows allows project managers to drive smarter, faster project execution and command higher value. I've seen software technology domain as well as hard-core manufacturing domain and one thing I'm sure of is Project management is not just about procedures or documents, it is about creating unique environment for delivering unique projects and requires a lot of human intelligence, which Gen AI won't be able to replicate. Therefore, PM skills can't be commoditized.
Project Managers can leverage Gen AI for expanding productivity horizons, delivering more in less time and cost. This in effect will transition the position of Project Managers as not just a catalyst for delivering project but as a value driver for the organization and the shareholders. Saving Changes...

It will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value. It is up to the PM to determine how to use the tools for the best outcomes Saving Changes...
The adoption of prompt engineering in Project Management will redefine it, creating a divide between PMs who embrace AI and those who don’t adapt. AI will streamline and automate repetitive tasks and provide quickly generated reports etc., but cant replace strategic decision-making, cross-functional collaboration, or problem-solving in complex work environments. AI has great potential to make us more effective in our PM roles. I think it will depend on whether we stay with the safe, proven methods or whether we go farther and try to work on the leading edge. Each has merit, but for day-in, day-out work it's the safe and proven path. Saving Changes...
