Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.
I agree 👌

I think it depends on the prompt engineering "artistic" input used to obtain what you are looking for, and make you a more efficient PM. The PM's QA/QC of the output will ultimately be the effective aspect of "commodity."

AI has brought with it many benefits and many challenges particularly around its ethical use. The widespread use of adoption of AI may eventually commoditize the more basic project management skills sets however, in the short term the use of AI can certainly improve the efficiency and speed with which PMs can do their work. PMs who are able to effectively use the AI to increase or enhance their productivity will be in more demand in the coming years.

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Im totally agree, it came to be a tool of help not a substitute and if you have all those qualities you will be very successful and necessary.

The impact of prompt engineering on project management skills will largely depend on how PMs choose to integrate and leverage these tools. Those who embrace prompt engineering to automate routine tasks, enhance decision-making, and focus on strategic activities are likely to differentiate themselves and command higher value. Conversely, PMs who rely solely on traditional methods without adapting to new technologies may find their skills becoming more commoditized.

In summary, prompt engineering presents an opportunity for PMs to elevate their roles and increase their value by focusing on higher-level strategic functions and continuous learning. The key is to view prompt engineering as a tool to augment and enhance project management capabilities rather than a replacement for the human elements that are critical to successful project management.

I could see how the use of Gen AI could impact the role of the project manager, but hopefully it allows PMs to focus on higher impact work and not administrative tasks.

I think that the AI tool will be very useful in technical and administrative tasks on the project, but it will not replace the ability to make decisions.

The adoption of prompt engineering will give value in project management. Gen AI will not replace the experianced Project Managers and those who have a good capacity to adapt in this changing situations.

The most challenging aspect of adapting with AI environment is keeping pace with it. It is evolving and learning at an exponential pace 24/7.
