Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
With the new generation of generative AI portfolio/program/project manager and business analyst role "are dead" at least in the way they were originally defined. I think a good source to understand that are the two courses on generative AI delivered for free by the PMI, mainly if you see the 3 layer model.
I would have t agree to disagree. The roles are not dead in my opinion, but enhanced with the use of AI. Allowing all to perform their roles more effectively when correctly utilized Saving Changes...
The integration of prompt engineering into project management is a double-edged sword, presenting both challenges and opportunities for Project Managers (PMs). On one hand, it has the potential to commoditize certain PM skills by automating routine tasks; on the other, it offers avenues for PMs to enhance their roles and command higher value by embracing these advancements.
The widespread adoption of prompt engineering is unlikely to fully commoditize project management skills. Instead, it serves as a catalyst for PMs to evolve, focusing more on strategic initiatives and human-centric aspects of projects. By leveraging AI as a tool to augment their capabilities, PMs can differentiate themselves and command higher value in the evolving landscape of project management. Saving Changes...

The rise of prompt engineering won't necessarily commoditize project management skills but could enhance them. By leveraging AI tools, PMs can improve efficiency, decision-making, and resource management, setting themselves apart in the market. The ability to strategically integrate AI into project workflows can make a PM more valuable, showcasing advanced problem-solving. As technology evolves, those who can effectively blend AI with traditional project management will command higher value. In essence, it's an opportunity for differentiation, not displacement. Generative AI does improve productivity and at the same time disrupts PM's role. For simple/BAU projects, business leaders have opportunity to realign Project Management skills with existing talent pool. Currently prompt engineering is performing enough high value tasks alongside automating greater degree of low-value tasks. In summary, core tasks associated with the PM's role might continue to be done by professionals with decision-making, communication, collaboration, vendor management and problem-solving will become more valuable.
