Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

It will be another tool in the PM toolbox for the PM to use. In some cases it will provide good summary or suggestions and other times it will be way off.

AI is a productivity tool .. it is as intelligent and smart as the user behind the screen.. it is replacing no one ..

AI will put more pressure on human as they need to be more productive..

Be careful, AI may waste your time with "Too Much Information" as you are tweaking the prompts and reading through the generated results and endless options "MIND THE AI"..

IMO, Generative AI is a powerful tool for project managers, enhancing efficiency and decision-making by automating tasks and providing data-driven insights. Instead of commoditizing skills, it elevates the PM's role, requiring adaptability, critical thinking, and strong communication. Mastering prompt engineering and focusing on standard Project MGMT skills will differentiate successful PMs. Embracing AI and collaborating with it will be key to achieving extraordinary project outcomes and commanding higher value. The future of project management lies in the synergy between human expertise and AI capabilities.

I believe the AI will help you to manage your work significantly to having the quick response and verification of data, less effort. However you have to specify and give them a clarity of your requirement / demand / output, perhaps you can follow guidance by using formular.

That's for sure, the promp engineering will help PMs to deliver different outcomes in less time, providing extra time to focus in other issues.

Hi PMI Community, I am Program Manager at Oracle. I am very much interested in understanding the real world use cases of AI usage in day to day life of a Program Manager. It may sound very absurd but when it comes to real usage of AI in Program/Project management, I am failing to understand its real use cases, as every project or program is unique in nature, we can use different checklist, standards, templates but is it really possible to use AI for some use case which can better Program Managers. Please help.

This trend raises important questions about the future of project management in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Many people have wondered whether AI will replace project managers. It's clear that PMs need to adapt and learn how to use and leverage AI to stay relevant and effective in their roles.
Who would have imagined 20 years ago that vehicles would not need drivers? We may not be there yet, but we will be soon.
PM's role will still remain, irrespective of the technology advances like Ai. These are tools which helps in minimizing the time required to create PM related document, but ultimately, the human element of PM leadership ,communication, stakeholder management etc.etc. can not be replaced by AI or any new tools(who knows ,if an intelligent Robot may replace human being ,but those may happen decades from now)
