Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Adoption of GenAI and prompt engineering will definitely benefit the project manager to streamline the project management processes and made more informed decisions. Nevertheless, the ethical responsibilities in using these tools are imperative to ensure secure, ethic and compliance to the laws or regulations.

Certainly the way we used to work is changing, as with the steam engines, people need to develop new skills and adapt their behaviour by replacing the current paradigm with this new one. It's as old as the philosopher Kant ones stated. The sooner you acept and embrace this fact, the better society is served. It is a differentiator, yes, and a must for all professionals, why going with blood traction vehicles when you have an engine. Saving Changes...

Yes it is still evolving and purely depends on the LLM we use and how we could optmize LLMs by sharing additional context; domain related attributes and environmental factors to it. It does add value overtime and improve the efficiency of a project manager's prompt engineering skill. Saving Changes...

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
Those who adopt prompt engineering will better differentiate themselves. As PMI's thought leadership showed, Project Managers can use GenAI to automate tasks, or assist them on tasks, or augment and extend their capabilities to complete tasks. That said, conventional tasks expected of project managers will cease to exist, and become more and more strategic. So, project managers need to upskill to survive and thrive. Saving Changes...

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering has the potential to both commoditize and differentiate project management skills, depending on how it is leveraged by professionals.
Commoditization: As prompt engineering becomes more mainstream, the basic skills associated with it may become more common and less distinctive. This could lead to a scenario where the foundational knowledge of prompt engineering is expected as a standard skill set for project managers, similar to how proficiency in basic software tools is now a given.
Differentiation: On the other hand, project managers who can master prompt engineering and apply it creatively to solve complex problems will stand out. The ability to use GenAI to enhance decision-making, optimize workflows, and drive innovation can significantly differentiate a PM from their peers. Those who can integrate these advanced capabilities into their project management practices will likely command higher value and recognition.
In summary, while the basic aspects of prompt engineering might become commoditized, the true differentiators will be the depth of understanding and the innovative application of these skills. Project managers who invest in continuous learning and stay ahead of the curve in leveraging GenAI will find themselves in a strong position to differentiate and add significant value to their organizations.
Looking forward to hearing more perspectives from the community! Saving Changes...
I feel that the adoption of AI in project management will mostly save time. 100% reliability is not guaranteed by AI. It will make things easier thats all but in a very good way. I guess in future it all depends on PMs who use the technology efficiently to get things done. Saving Changes...

Prompt engineering indeed has the potential to influence the project management landscape. While it may commoditize certain aspects of project management by automating routine tasks and decision-making processes, it can also empower project managers to focus on high-level strategic thinking and value-added activities. Those who embrace prompt engineering and leverage it to enhance skills and capabilities can differentiate themselves within the marketplace. Saving Changes...
