Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

While prompt engineering may streamline certain aspects of project management, skilled project managers who combine technical knowledge, soft skills, and strategic thinking could be continue to command higher value.
This is a fantastic response

There are benefits of having gen AI in your PM toolbox, but be sure to have guardrails and verification processes in place to ensure for accuracy, and be transparent about the use of AI.

The use of prompt engineering can be helpful and time saving at times. However, it should not be used in place of Project Managers' independent research and learning. I like how prompt engineering assists me in summarizing complex issues in an area that I have no idea. Yet, I believe on areas that Project Managers know well of, it should only be used to fill the gap.

No PMs will still be needed for strategic and tactical project management

I believe AI will complement my skills by handling repetitive tasks and offering data-driven insights, freeing me to focus on what matters most strategic thinking and building strong relationships with my team and stakeholders.

The advent of AI is poised to phase out certain tasks and roles as we know them today. However, for skilled and knowledgeable professionals, this shift could represent a significant opportunity to enhance productivity and efficiency. Rather than relying on AI to completely take over their tasks, project managers can leverage AI to augment their work. By automating simpler steps that require minimal human input, they can focus on more complex tasks that necessitate human expertise, thereby producing more valid and acceptable results.

In this context, prompt engineering can serve as a valuable tool for project managers. It allows them to streamline processes, reduce manual effort, and concentrate on strategic aspects of their projects. This approach not only improves overall efficiency but also enables project managers to demonstrate their unique skills and command higher value in their roles.

Ultimately, the integration of AI and prompt engineering into project management can lead to a more dynamic and differentiated skill set, positioning project managers to thrive in an evolving landscape.

The widespread adoption of prompt engineering in project management will not necessarily commoditize PM skills; instead, it presents an opportunity for PMs to differentiate themselves and command higher value.

While AI-driven automation can streamline routine tasks—such as scheduling, reporting, and risk analysis—strategic decision-making, leadership, stakeholder management, and problem-solving remain uniquely human skills. PMs who leverage prompt engineering effectively can enhance efficiency , improve decision making and boost communication.
