Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

I believe more GenAI and prompt engineering will help PMs deferentiate themselves and prioritize high value tasks. This make efficient on the on-time project completion and on-budget for project expenses.

I don't believe the widespread adoption of prompt engineering will commoditize project management skills. I believe prompt engineering should be seen as one of the tools in ones toolbelt and will assist in differentiating the work completed. The use of this tool should be paired with strategic and creative thinking skills to provide elements that allow the results to standout and, thus, differentiating work as outputs completed by YOU. As a Project Manager, I sometimes feel there is a delicate balance of ensuring one's deliverables possesses a standardized feel while including elements that could be viewed as your "fingerprint".

The skills required for project management are matured and strengthened with dedication and commitment to the endeavors we participate in. The autonomy that AI can have to emulate these skills still requires a lot of work and time, and perhaps cannot be surpassed. Prompt engineering is a tool that will greatly help project managers become more efficient, more assertive, and deliver greater value, displacing repetitive tasks and documentation, and making better decisions with the guidance of GenAI. What is certain is that we must develop the skills required to be good prompt engineers if we want to be good project managers.

I don't think the adoption of AI will commoditize project managers. Instead, it will enable PMs to focus more on core project management duties rather than peripheral or operational tasks. This shift will allow them to concentrate more on domain knowledge and the skills required for successful project acquisition.

As LLMs become more reliable and data more accessible, we face a critical challenge: administrative PM tasks will become automated, potentially eliminating the training ground for junior project managers.



The key differentiator for successful PMs will increasingly be skilled prompt engineering - not just writing better queries, but leveraging deep project experience to:


Ask the right questions
Identify emerging issues, before data is available
Create innovative solutions
Communicate effectively with stakeholders

The most valuable PM skills are shifting from task execution to strategic thinking and judgment that AI cannot currently replicate.

I strongly believe that the advent of Gen AI will not outrightly replaced the informed Project Managers but rather empower them to function optimally. Just keep up the pace of the technological evolutions and as Project Managers, we will always be relevant and adding value to our respective domains.
I totally agree with your point. AI is hear to stay and if a PM aligns, learns, unlearns and relearn one will be better positioned to deliver value at any given time
