Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.
Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.
Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?
Adopting of prompt engineering engineering helps project managers devote more time to value-driven activities, creativity, and leadership Saving Changes...
The rise of prompt engineering won’t replace project management skills—it’ll help PMs stand out by combining AI tools with their unique human strengths. While AI can handle repetitive tasks and provide insights, it can’t replicate leadership, emotional intelligence, or the ability to navigate complex, unpredictable situations. PMs who master these tools will deliver smarter, faster results while keeping the human touch that drives team success. Embracing AI isn’t about being replaced; it’s about becoming a more innovative and valuable project manager Saving Changes...
The use of Prompt Engineering gives the PM access to information that hitherto was not readily available. In certain jurisdictions where access information on the subject matter is limited, AI opens the PM up to other schools of thoughts or information sourced from other jurisdictions or scenarios which may be of immense benefit to the realization of Project goals. There should however not be over-reliance on the AI since certain scenarios also requires the use of intuition, personal intellect, lived experiences of other PMs and a proper understanding of the internal and external factors. Hi PMI Community, I think GenAI/prompt engineering is a powerful tool that will revolutionize project management. It is already and will continue commoditizing some administrative project management tasks. However, differentiation will come from how adept PMs are with prompt engineering and the uniqueness/individuality of the PM writing the prompts and the project being worked on. Saving Changes...

There’s going to be a clear divide: some Project Managers will learn how to leverage AI and prompt engineering to enhance their effectiveness, while others may resist it or remain uncomfortable with the technology. That gap will create a major differentiator.
Prompt engineering isn’t just a passing trend — it’s a skill that allows a PM to translate complex needs into precise, value-generating outputs. Whether it’s automating reporting, analyzing RFPs, drafting proposals, or summarizing stakeholder input, the ability to craft prompts that actually get results will become a competitive advantage.
Just like Excel once separated the good from the great, AI will do the same — but on a much bigger scale. PMs who can harness it won’t just keep up; they’ll amplify their impact, reduce friction across teams, and deliver better outcomes, faster.
So no, prompt engineering won’t commoditize project management — it’ll elevate those who embrace it. The real value will lie not in AI itself, but in how creatively and effectively a PM uses it.
Strongly agree to the AI presence in day-to-day activities makes the difference in executing the project or Portfolio handled. Also, efforts are visibly seen when the Project team shows the productivity and customer value Add. Saving Changes...

AI and prompt engineering aren’t going to make project management a cheap, replaceable skill. If anything, they’ll help PMs stand out and be more valuable. Here’s why: AI Helps, But It Can’t Do It All, it means, AI can automate the boring stuff like scheduling, reports, and risk tracking. But real project management is about leadership, strategy, and handling people—things AI just can’t replace. PMs who learn to work with AI will stay ahead of the game. Secondly, PMs Who Use AI Will Be in High Demand, it save time, make smart decision, and able to manage AI project. thirdly, AI Won’t Replace PMs But It’ll Change the Job, those PM who embrace AI will be more valuable than ever. The real game-changer is knowing how to use AI to drive results, not just checking off tasks. so, as far as I know, AI won’t take your job—it’ll make you a better PM. The ones who use AI will stand out and get ahead Saving Changes...
