Hi PMI Community! I’m Sarah Philbrick, and I work as a Product Manager at PMI with a focus on our learning offerings. As we go on this skill-building journey together, I’m excited to engage in meaningful conversations, explore trending topics, and learn from each other.

Reflecting on one such topic, GenAI and prompt engineering, I am interested to hear your perspective on commoditization vs. differentiation.

Will the widespread adoption of prompt engineering commoditize project management skills, or can it help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value?

When used responsibly by skilled professionals, AI can significantly enhance productivity and deliver measurable value. In the hands of those who understand its potential, AI is already driving meaningful progress. As change agents, our focus should be on harnessing this transformation— "building windmills, not walls"

Not at all, project management skills are still essential in using Gen AI and prompt engineering efficiently. PMs will benefit from prompt engineering because they get better responses with minimal errors.

AI is a wonderful tool when used with care, creativity, and consideration. Prompt engineering is a creative skill, a specialty - much like skills used in other creative fields, the results are only as good as the creative. That said, I absolutely think AI will help PMs differentiate themselves and command higher value.

I think this is a natural evolution of the tools available to the human being, starting with the slide rule, then the calculator, the computer programing languages (fortran), spredsheets, etc. It is not a matter of the tool itself, but it is how talented is the PM to use such tools that will make the difference.

All I predict is - PM roles will not be taken over by AIs but will be taken over my the PMs who adapt changes and learn how to use and leverage AI to stay relevant and effective in their roles.

L'adoption du " prompt engineering" peut plutôt aider les gestionnaires de projet à se différencier et à obtenir une valeur plus élevée.

L'adoption of prompt engineering can help to differentiate and create more value Thanks.
AI definitely adds value to project management; whether completing day-to-days or streamlining work flows. But the human touch is irreplaceable at least for now. he role of a skilled PM is indispensable.
