Validating and checking outputs is critical when working with AI systems like Generative AI. Such validation approaches may include establishing clear criteria, implementing strong testing protocols, and continuous refinement.

In your experience with AI, what are some best practices for ensuring the results you receive are accurate, relevant, and aligned with your original goals?

As project managers, we are increasingly relying on AI to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of project objectives. Advanced prompting patterns, such as Flipped Interaction, have proven to be particularly invaluable in this context. This approach transforms AI from a passive responder into an active collaborator, prompting it to ask targeted follow-up questions about evolving goals. By doing so, we ensure that every recommendation is deeply rooted in the latest project context and stakeholder priorities. This iterative alignment not only keeps our projects on track but also builds stakeholder confidence, demonstrating that we are adapting strategically, rather than just reacting to change.

Just keep asking questions until you receive exactly what you want. Then you can return to that format later.

Be clear about your goal, give the AI enough context, and iterate.

Fact‑check important outputs, ask the AI to explain its reasoning, and refine the prompt until the result matches what you need.

Hi , I took this course "Talking to AI: Prompt Engineering for Project Managers" from PMI . I think this answers your query . It has talked about formula for creating prompt - RTM and CREATE which is very helpful in crafting initial prompt and as you get the reply from Gen AI , keep refining your questions to arrive at the final outout . This course has also showcased two real example use case of creating prompt and refining it in Project management. Hope you find this helpful :)

Personally, the more specific I am, and the more refinement I provide, the more accurate the information I am given. I was once working on an assignment that required generating a 100 word case study. Upon my first prompt, the data was inaccurate when I reviewed it so I continued to refine my prompt to get to my desired result by asking for quantitative information and by asking for citing its sources so that I could validate its response.

As far as I am concerned, optimizing AI results begins with clearly defining the context, scope, and objective of the task. Providing examples, as well as clarifying what is not desired, can further improve alignment at this stage. It is also important to treat the interaction as an iterative process, allowing you to provide additional guidance so the AI can refine and adjust its output. Once the result appears satisfactory, it remains our responsibility to review the response for accuracy, particularly in areas where precision is critical. Finally, we can ask the AI to assess whether the output is fully aligned with the given guidelines and to explicitly state any assumptions made during the process. This final step helps ensure the response is as reliable as possible and free from unreasonable assumptions that could undermine its credibility.

When using AI systems, best practices to ensure accurate, relevant, and goal-aligned results include providing clear, specific, and well-structured prompts with sufficient context; defining the desired format, scope, and constraints upfront; verifying outputs against reliable sources or subject-matter expertise, especially for technical or high-stakes information; iterating through follow-up questions to refine responses; and critically evaluating the results rather than assuming correctness, ensuring they align with your original objectives and professional standards.
