With Generative AI, iteratively refining and optimizing prompts can lead to better AI-generated results. This may involve adjusting the specificity or clarity of the prompt to increase relevance and accuracy of results.

What examples do you have of how improving a prompt drastically changed the output quality?  What specific changes did you make that led to the improvement?

Effective prompting has been a game-changer for me, transforming my thoughts, ideas, facts, and examples into results. It often gets me at least 80% of the way there. Beyond that, it enables me to create high-quality materials tailored to the different audiences at the right level. The process of refining and iterating has been both enjoyable and valuable in further optimizing my results.

Framed prompts are essential and work well, especially when I clearly expect the output. However, I seldom use chat-based or discussion-style prompts when the output format is not yet defined, or when I’m still figuring out what I want. This approach is beneficial when stepping into a new industry, where understanding the industry-specific context or shaping a strategy or business case is crucial.

In these cases, I start with a high-level request and refine it iteratively through dialogue, adjusting based on new insights. For example, I might say:

“Oh, I actually meant XXX.”
“That’s interesting—how would it look if we considered XXX aspects?”
“I just found this information, and it seems to conflict with what we discussed—what do you think?”

This process is similar to a chain-of-thought approach but leans more towards brainstorming. It allows for exploration, iteration, and deeper insights.

specifying the persona role, the business field, adding compliance requirement and national law constrains, excluding non relevant aspects, led to much better results.
Prompt refining is crucial - in my MBA dissertation where I have carried out a AI-enabled contract evaluation and the Prompt development and testing loops where indeed the more value adding and demanding activities. It is only through extensive testing on comparable applications (in my case was understading delivery relatd contract clauses and comparing them to the standard requirements that where defined on this matter on the Global terms of purchase. The output changed drastically as I have improved the prompt over several iteratnions. What I have also learned is the definition of quality might vary as you carry out adjustment and you realize that the quality definition also need to evolve and be more precise.

"As someone new to Generative AI, I have recently learned how refining a prompt can significantly improve output quality. Initially, I would provide vague prompts and receive responses that didn’t fully meet my expectations. However, after taking a course on prompt engineering, I realized the importance of providing clear, detailed instructions. For example, instead of asking a tool to 'summarize a document,' I now specify the key points I want to highlight, the tone, and the intended audience. This small change results in much more useful responses. Moving forward, I plan to refine my prompts consistently to achieve the best possible output."

I have read on social networks about different frameworks and patterns; I am now more familiarized with CREATE, which is part of the PMI Prompt Engineering course.

GenAI is essentially a tool that is in development. Therefore, staying ahead of the curve through iterations and developing the goldmine of prompts will ensure that the GenAI hype does not overtake teams when it actually becomes a requirement in winning lucrative projects in the next 5 to 10 years.

In my experience with Generative AI (GenAI), refining a prompt can drastically improve the accuracy, relevance, and clarity of the output. Initially, broad or vague prompts often generate generic or unfocused responses, but by adding context, specifying requirements, and structuring queries more precisely, the AI produces much more detailed and actionable insights. For example, when using GenAI for project planning, a simple prompt like "Create a risk management plan" may yield a basic template, while refining it to "Generate a risk management plan for a software development project, including mitigation strategies for budget overruns and timeline delays" results in a far more targeted and useful response. This highlights how iterative refinement enhances AI's effectiveness, making it a valuable tool for project management decision-making.

Refining a prompt when using Generative AI (GenAI) can significantly enhance the output quality, especially in the context of project management. Here are some ways in my experience, that refining prompts has made a notable difference:
1. Clarity and Precision: Well-crafted prompts eliminate ambiguity, ensuring that the AI generates precise and relevant outputs. For project managers, this means receiving detailed and actionable insights, plans, and updates.
2. Contextual Relevance: By including specific context and background in prompts, project managers ensure that the AI's responses are aligned with the project's unique needs and goals. This leads to more tailored and useful recommendations.
3. Efficiency: Clear and refined prompts reduce the need for multiple iterations, saving time and effort. Project managers can quickly obtain high-quality outputs, allowing them to make informed decisions faster.
4. Creativity and Innovation: Refined prompts can inspire the AI to generate creative solutions and innovative ideas. This is particularly valuable for project managers when brainstorming new strategies, solving complex problems, or overcoming obstacles.
5. Consistency: Consistent and well-defined prompts help maintain uniformity in outputs, which is crucial for project documentation, reporting, and communication. This ensures that all stakeholders receive clear and coherent information.
6. Error Reduction: Clear prompts help minimize misunderstandings and errors in the AI's responses. This is essential for project managers to avoid costly mistakes and ensure smooth project execution.
7. Enhanced Collaboration: Refined prompts can facilitate better collaboration among team members by generating clear guidelines, task assignments, and progress reports. This leads to improved coordination and teamwork.
8. Scalability: Effective prompts enable project managers to scale their use of GenAI across various projects and teams, ensuring consistent and high-quality outputs regardless of the project's size or complexity.
By refining prompts, project managers can harness the full potential of GenAI to improve project planning, execution, and outcomes. It's all about asking the right questions and providing the right context to get the best possible results.

Being concise and specific helps the AI to give some valuable answers. It also learns with time as you ask further questions.
Agreed.
