People want current references, but being self-employed, giving my skills, my customers demand confidentiality.

This can be a difficulty - on occasion a client has presented me with a contract thta effectively says I can't even tell anyone I was working for them - which would leave an apparent black hole in my resume.
I do however find that most can be negotiate with - at least to the point where you can talk about expereince there. references of course are a bit harder.
My advice would be what some larger commercial vendors do - agree this up front, in the contract, that they will act as a reference for you. that way you can negotiate this - for some you might agree to take that clause out, but only for appropriate consideration (extra payment), and for others you might agree a reduced rate to get a good referee.
