Agustina Ramos Project Manager | MBA| Independent Buenos Aires, Argentina

Looking to transition to private sector & lead projects.  Extensive experience in coordination tasks but no direct mgmt experience.  Any tips on the jump, valuable certs, or public vs private PM differences? Thanks!

Here are some specific questions I have:

For those who have transitioned from Coordinator to PM, what were some of the biggest adjustments you had to make?
Are there any recommended courses or certifications that would be particularly valuable for someone in my position?
What are some of the key differences in project management between the public and private sectors?
Any insights or advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Agustina, in terms of certifications, I highly recommend you look into doing the CAPM as its a great starting point and you will gain ot of knowledge during the journey.

The biggest change from being a coordinator to becoming a PM is that you will reply more on your soft skills: Communcation, delegation, leadership, emotional intelligence and so on.

Thank you so much for your advice! I'll definitely look into the CAPM certification, as it seems like a great way to build a strong foundation in project management principles despite I have some certifications, like Google, and IBD-PM4R.

Agustina -

1. Transition from coordinator to PM - your focus shifts from being task-oriented to becoming more objective or goal-oriented. Put another way, you have a broader, more strategic view.

3. While project management principles won't differ between public and private sectors, for the most part, private sector projects tend to be financially driven with profit, revenue or cost reduction as primary drivers whereas public sector projects often have less financially driven outcomes. Public sector projects often operate with strict procurement practices and fixed budgets whereas (some) private sector projects might have flexibility in both those areas.

Thank you for your insights Kiron! Your points about the transition from coordinator to project manager resonate with me specially when you talk about shifting from a task-oriented focus to a more goal-oriented and strategic perspective, is something I'm preparing for. I appreciate your guidance and will keep these considerations in mind!

A vos Agustina.
