I was recently observing my brother-in-law as the coach for my nephew's baseball team. I was shocked at all the detailed plans he had to juggle between organizing uniforms, team photos, scheduling the games, scheduling playoffs and managing a budget. My brother-in-law is not a PM by trade but is doing a great job balancing scope, schedule and budget. It made me wonder if anyone here uses your PM skills and methodologies in your personal life. If so, what approach do you find yourself using and do you have any templates or "hacks" to share?

My checklists have checklists. You can enjoy the trip if those lists are done though.
I totally agree, Kara!

My mistake...I use ToDo for that. It's very convenient for switching between my computer and phone.
Oh even better! I just learned how to use ToDo using AI meeting minutes to place all my ToDo with reminders from all my meetings. Having this for home as well would be amazing to have it all in one place.

This is a good example of being able to spend one weekend or two based on how you prioritize. One weekend of managed chaos is preferred when painting.

Tagging in OneNote? I will try that. I do this at work for cross dependencies but never thought of this for home. Thank you!
I honestly use "Notes" on my Apple Device!

I use Notes for keeping track of my television watch lists! It's so hard to flip through Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, etc. It's almost like I am recreating the cable tv experience through Notes!

My PM skills were recently put to the test as the Personal Representative (Executrix) for my parents' estate. While I followed an agile project management methodology, what made it challenging was emotions were high with my siblings. Regular communication with my "stakeholders" was key! I also focused on small iterations and critical paths towards the end goal of settling the estate. Knowing what was in my control, under my influence and out of my control or influence helped me to empathetically answer questions and assuage concerns. I leaned heavily on my SME's (tax attorney and estate law team) to proactively and reactively address issues or concerns. Settling your parent's estate is never easy but having PM skills to navigate the process has been immensely helpful.

Linda, thank you for opening up to share your experience. We feel helpless, so want to help and bringing organization or process to the family during difficult times. It's our way to feel like we are doing something. This really resonated with me due to my mom passing 19 years ago, along with your examples for stakeholders being family & SME's. I hope we brought some ease to our stakeholders.

Hello Kara Austin

YES! All the time. So many examples but here is just one. For years I have been the coordinator for our family ‘reunion’ each July 4th. There is a three bedroom house with 32 visitors for the weekend. Coordination for tents where most people sleep and when people are arriving and leaving. The biggest effort is the meal plan schedule. Each family has to take a meal that requires all the shopping, cooking and clean up. I send out color coordinated spreadsheet with which family has which day and how many people to expect for the meal.

looking forward to seeing other answers

It's nice to see you here Kris! We miss you at PMI. This sounds like it should be a webinar. 32 visitors is a huge achievement. I'm so glad you shared to have others share as well. I have a question - is dessert included in the dinner prep?

When I get married, 30 years ago, I made a full project plan to arrive calm and relaxed on my wedding day. It worked. Adding to that I taught from years in Universities and private institutions business analysis and project/program/portfolio management courses. The most popular was "Projects for all" where I helped people to understand that they are performing project management from the moment they get up to the moment they go back to bed.
