Recently we've seen PMI launch PMI-SCP (Senior Construction Professional), and in a friendly discussion started by Dennylson Pinto some questions came up...
# Is the PMI-CP certification mature enough (volume/global certifications/time in the market) to evolve to a Senior CP? Is there enough critical mass to have an advanced certification?
# Will this be a trend? Will we start having "senior" certifications like SPMP (Senior Project Management Professional), SACP (Senior Agile Certified Practitioner), SRMP (Senior Risk Management Professional), SSP (Senior Scheduling Professional), etc.? We already have DASSM (Disciplined Agile Senior Scrum Master)...
What are the pros & cons?
Could this benefit the professionals, community and PMI?

While it is helpful to have a certification ladder (similar to a career ladder in jobs), I'm skeptical as such laddering is easy to establish in technical competencies where the ability to perform an activity at a specific level of ability can be assessed objectively, but is a lot harder when we looks at the application of "power skills".
If the higher level certifications are based on actions and behavior taken during simulations and are assessed by seasoned practitioners, that would be effective, but unfortunately such methods don't scale well to make such programs profitable.
As AI technologies advance, what I'm suggesting might well be possible, but at present, a knowledge testing certification alone would not be effective for senior-level assessment.

Thanks for your insightful feedback, Kiron!
I agree with you regarding the difficulty and ability of effectively applying and scaling out senior-level assessment. Let's see what AI brings us...

Another perspective to look into, is that if this goes ahead what will the impact of such senior certifications on "reducing" the value of the current existing ones... Saving Changes...

Joao, here are my 2 cents:
First, the PMI-SCP is not a credential. It is a certificate of completion of all of the components (PMI-CP plus the additional 3) where you receive a certificate of completion and a badge. Robert Maiale can elaborate more on this.
In terms of maturity, I don't really measure maturity in volume, and time but the quality of content and value it provides to the targeted audience so in this regards, it is very mature and there is a ton of learnings in the courses.
I highly doubt this will be a trend, that doesn't make any sense. The PMI-CP crededential is unique in its nature for many reasons. First, it is industry specific, and second, it is the only credential where you have to take specific mandatory courses before you can sit for the capstone exam. In the beginning, you needed to take all 7 courses and all three micro-credentials before you site for the exam, but now, you have to take four courses (including one micro-credential) and in order to encourage professionals to take the other three courses, they introduced this second level because they truly believe (and I do too), that there is a ton of learning in those courses.
There was an interesting discussion on this earlier and Bob clearly stated the following: "The intent of the PMI-SCP certificate of completion is to reinforce the importance of the 3 courses that were originally part of the CP certification but were removed as part of the streamlined version we subsequently released. There is still great content to be consumed after one attains the PMI-CP certification and we want to encourage that journey. The CP certification does come with a 3 year experience requirement, keep in mind."
Hello, I hope you are all doing well. I have a question - and would really like to hear your advice! I passed my PMI-CP exam in early April, and completed the 3 additional courses required for PMI-SCP. I contacted PMI many times to check when I can obtain my PMI-SCP status, but in vain, and no one seems to know the answer. Do you know where I can seek help regarding this issue? Thank you!

Hi, Ducan,
The process for issuing the PMI-SCP designation certificate is not yet automated and may take a few weeks.
I completed the third course on August 11 and received the certificate on September 1. Saving Changes...
