This is the million dollar question, Prajkta. AI is still in its infancy so its hard to say how it will shape the future over the next 20 years as of now. It will probably have a huge impact on healthcare (enhance diagnostics accuracy, personalized treatment plans, and drug discovery), Education (Virtual tutors and AI-driven platforms), Trnasportation (Autonomous vehicles) and much more.

Given that climate change is likely to wreak havoc across all continents within the next 20 years time, I'd hope that one positive use of AI will be to help get us out of the mess we have created.

Beyond that, if you buy into the work of futurists like Kurzweil we'd see the dawn of AGI and singularity which should help humanity across multiple domains including the ones Rami listed above.

However, unless we change our tendencies to misuse disruptive innovations for quite a while before the good outweighs the bad, we could end up accelerating our collective demise. Witness the significant increased carbon footprint of data centers resulting from the heavy usage of Gen AI models.

Prajkta,

Here’s my “conditional” high-level projection of how AI will change life in 20 years:

--------------------

In twenty years, the term AI will be a footnote in history books, as its current distinction as a technological domain will have gone the way of “analog telephone lines” and become a distant fuzzy memory for the grey-haired among us. Why? Because its ubiquitous integration will make it indistinguishable as a technology.

Thus, the hyperbolic sensationalism we are witnessing today will have vanished. Although there will be a majority sense of societal progress, AI’s hidden, burdened “societal costs” will be on full display but narratively written off to other factors to protect the integrity of the world’s greatest GNP-contributing sector, AI.

--------------------

The trajectory that creates the above forecast is based on society and government giving a “perpetual hall pass” to the AI Industry, allowing them to be NON-transparent.

If we want to mitigate the burdened costs to society, then AI-based technologies must be fully transparent and capable of being held accountable—A heavy lift when the multi-trillion-dollar AI industrial “horse race” is already underway.

It can change the theoretical aspect of the jobs. For example, lots of engineers may loose their jobs or may be required to compete with AI, however, handymen are still working. Electrical Engineer vs electricians

AI is doing that from more than 50 years ago. Most of the times we are not aware on that. But lot of things that surround to us, including it things like the complex algorithms to support the internet, have a key component based on AI.

I envision two potential futures: A dystopian one, like in Terminator, where AI rebels against humanity, or a more optimistic scenario where technology empowers us. I'm hopeful for the latter, where we harness AI for our benefit.

AI will become an indispensable part of our daily lives, enhancing how we work, learn, and interact with the world. As we embrace these changes, it's crucial to navigate the challenges and opportunities with thoughtful consideration, ensuring that AI serves as a positive force for everyone.
