It depends on your career path. Have you mapped out your career plan yet?

Project Management skills can significantly benefit you in handling projects effectively. Obtaining certifications like PMP might be crucial for advancing your career in Project Management, however, you may not need it in your career.

Clifferd -

If your involvement is less with project work and more with operations, you might benefit from courses and certifications related to operational excellence (e.g. Lean Six Sigma). However, if the organization you work for does not value or leverage such skills, it won't help.

A PMP can certainly be beneficial but I agree it does depend on your future goals and your current employer.

Operations such as industrial engineering is often focused on production efficiency, whether that is cost, flow, or quality. PM in that case is often focused on Lean, and continuous improvement type activities which are included in the Disciplined Agile toolkit. Large one-time changes like new production tooling or quality processes often fit the traditional "waterfall" type PM especially in highly regulated industries. A certification won't help you do the job itself as much as help get you into the leadership position.

If you want to change jobs, then the PMP shows you have relevant experience as well as knowing industry standards instead of just how your current employer does things. I'm currently working production improvements but have applied PM principles as an engineering lead or PM in R&D and product development all the way through late-lifecycle retrofit and modifications. Having the PMP opens doors to new and different job opportunities.

Clifferd, in general, PMP is very helpful and is a great asset. At the end of the day, it all depends on your career path and goals. Whatever credential and professional development that you do, it should compliment and support your career aspirations!
