What might be the causes of project failure

I am doing a research on why most of IT project fails. so i would like to hear different opinions. please help.

Have a read through all the archives of the risks list,

I did extensive research on this subject in seismic exploration projects (on land) and found out that major contributors in 73% of seismic projects failure are:

1. Accidental project managers (no formal training in project management discipline)
2. Deterministic duration estimates
3. Using Operation Management instead of specific project management processes
4. No detailed planning
5. Absence of EV

Inability to control without a detailed project plan

There has been so much research into this already. Have you looked at the Standish Chaos reports? And I think it would be fair to challenge the assumption that most IT projects fail. What's your definition of failure?
