I have noted that number of PM roles are based on-site.

The easiest approach would be to join a company which has locations in other companies and request an internal transfer after working locally for a while. You could also take on a role as a PM for a project spanning multiple locations as that would give you the chance to work with team members at each site and perhaps the opportunity to travel to those sites.

Failing that, the next most effective approach would be to leverage your close network and have someone who has personal experience with your work and is living in a foreign country you are interested in to recommend you to a hiring manager or recruiter.

Ntkozo, I can't add much to Kiron's feedback which I fully agree with. Great advise!

From long time ago, at least in my experience, the decision about to hire people on site or not it will depends on each region/country regulations and costs. I am working in the greatest consulting firm in the world mainly related to IT initiatives then I can put on the table examples about that.

Working for a company with an international client base can be one point of entry. In many cases, companies will have a central hub for most of the office work, but send personnel to foreign locations temporarily such as during the proposal phase to observe job sites first hand, for periodic major project reviews, and during parts or all of the construction phase.

American schools worldwide are full of the children of professionals on international assignments, especially in civil engineering and the petroleum industries. It can be very disruptive to families, especially moving to undesirable locations, so long term relocations or frequent lengthy business travel is often seen as a sacrifice that leads to better opportunities and promotions.

Yes, I've noticed the same trend over the past year.

Many project management roles have shifted towards on-site or hybrid models. I believe this is partly due to the perception that managing stakeholders and building trust is easier in person, though I don't necessarily share that view.

hen it comes to international remote work, tax regulations and compliance issues also play a significant role in these decisions. While remote work has its challenges, I still see great potential for effective project management in a virtual environment.
