Gamification has the potential to transform the way people work on projects. Certainly such an approach modifies how they interact with one another across the workplace.

Yes, I have, to some extent, and the lesson I've learned is to use wit extreme caution. It is far too easy for the game to overcome the underlying purpose, and for participants to end up focused on the game and winning rather than the needs of the project - and while it would be ideal to perfectly align the gamification so it supports every possible aspect of the project that will very rarely be realistic.
Also, some people respond better and perform better in gamification than others, so you risk introduce conflict and demoralisation into the environment.
I like gamification for environments such as sales, where the purpose is to engage the majority and you can tolerate excluding some because the benefits from the majority more than compensate. In projects however a single important stakeholder feeling excluded can be fatal. Saving Changes...

I haven't tried it, but I've heard positive things about it. I'm not sure how I could use it without technology - I know some PM tools have gamification options (for want of a better term) programmed in. I think some people would find it distracting or not appropriate, so I think the use of gamification would have to depend on the team members and the culture of the project - in some situations it would work well but in others it may not have the desired effect at all.
