While the rigour of methodologies such as PMP and Prince have certainly served well, it is increasingly being recognised that in many real life situations a less deterministic approach can be used, generally with proficient and mature project managers who understand the traditional approaches and know when a what parts to use, and when to step aside from and around these.
This has become known as Extreme Project Management, or XPM, although that term isn't great, as it suggests the cases where this is used due to radical situations, rather than the more common use such as in innovation projects.
Does anyone know if there is certification being developed, or already available in this? I suspect it would have to be experience and scenario-, maybe exercise-based rather than a formalised paper exam, but should not be beyond the capability of workshop and exercise type assessment.
