Not involved in all phases of project?

linkedin twitter facebook   New Practitioners
I'm beginning to prepare application material for the PMP. When tracking project hours, do they accept projects where I was not involved in all phases? For example, there are a few projects where I was not involved in the first couple of stages (initiation, planning), but then picked up the project and lead it through to completion.

Yes, it is not necessary to have participated in all phases of the project. You only need to describe what you did, which best practices you applied, and what your functions were. I only participated in the planning and evaluation phases of a project. Recently, I became eligible.

Maria is 100% correct. We would only add that PMI has moved away from the project manager's role as being "large and in-charge" to a role closer to that of "servant leader". This change is more in line with an agile mindset. So try to use strong action verbs to describe a "servant" role during a particular phase: to lead, to collaborate, to direct, to motivate etc.

Noelle, I agree with both Maria and Michael. You should be good to record the project even if you didn’t participate in all phases. Not very uncommon in projects for someone to take over!

Most of my projects so far have either been as a SME or a lead within one aspect of the project. So, yes, it sounds like your experience applies. Just be sure to be detailed in your description.
