Greetings all. Our organization is a relatively new adopter of formal project management processes. Wondering if there are recommendations for organizations that will conduct a review of our PMO's effectiveness and offer recommendations for improvements. We are a provider of healthcare services to incarcerated populations with approximately 9,000 employees for reference. Services are primarily delivered to state departments of correction. Thank you!

Norman, PMI recently acquired PMO Global Alliance. I would suggest touching base with Americo Pinto on LinkedIn and seeking his advise on this. I am sure he will provide solid recommendations!

In addition to Rami's suggestion, you may wish to approach your local PMI chapter to see if they have any recommendations for firms providing this sort of consulting work.

Is there a charter for your PMO spelling out its mandate and any type of performance objectives already established for what it was expected to achieve?

Kiron, I will follow up as you suggest and consult the local PMI chapter. Regarding question about whether our charter addresses performance objectives, our charter does not specifically address performance objectives. Our PMO is still working to establish itself within the organization. Key principles from the charter are shared. ❖ Establish a governance structure ensuring a Best Practices approach ❖ The PMO will be the window to all projects and the single source of truth regarding them ❖ Decision to initiate a project is consistent with the company's direction considering long and short-term goals ❖ Both human and financial cost/benefit are integral to the decision-making process ❖ Risk Assessment to initiate a project as well as to not move forward with the project is considered for the business prior to a final decision ❖ The PMO is focused on supporting project managers in the successful delivery of projects.
You are recommending that we add a section to charter to specifically address performance objectives, correct?

Establishing a PMO is a strategic project like any other. There needs to be a business case underlying and supporting the investment - one time and ongoing. As such, it would be worth while to identify specific KPIs which the PMO will be measured against and which represent "value" in the eyes of your senior stakeholders. You could take a baseline of those, benchmark against best of class similar organizations and establish progressive, realistic targets for the near, mid and long term.
