Here's my take on being a project manager: Being a project manager

In short, I think the value of having a project manager means there is a single person in control of the work effort and that person is focused on delivering, coordinating and managing the work instead of doing it.

I suggest that one of the major values from having a PM is the increase in the odds of success for the project. PMs should bring not only their individual lessons learned (experience) but also access to the "wisdom" of the tribe of fellow PM practicioners especially in their domain of work.
