Sounds like you'd need to give them a history lesson into some of the well publicized success stories of the profession. I might cherry pick some from that great 2019 PMI anniversary hardcover book which listed many famous projects of the past 50 years.
But at the end of the day, it comes down to selling. You could take a fear selling approach by using the metaphor of insurance or you could take a value selling approach by talking up the stakeholder satisfaction, competitive advantage and other benefits of a disciplined approach to delivery.
