How might genetic EI impact project management, and what implications could it have for team building, leadership, and communication strategies?

As project managers, we are aware of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and its impact on team performance and project success. Genetic EI refers to the idea that emotional intelligence can be inherited and influenced by genetic factors.

EI is just another set of skills, like the ability to juggle or to give a good speech. With a growth mindset, anyone can improve across all four quadrants, but where they start will vary based on a combination of nature & nurture drivers.

If anything, I'd prefer a leader who has is aware of how low their EI is and applies themselves diligently to raise it rather than one who starts out with relatively high EI but doesn't believe they can be better.

I don't think that the level of EI is as significant to performance as how it is applied regardless of whether the source is nature vs. nurture.

A high EQ doesn't mean someone is predisposed to help others. Con artists and manipulators master its use to exploit others. Whether the PM chooses to use those skills for the benefit of the team or for purely selfish reasons will have a greater impact than level of skill itself.
