Hi when I took my degree it was called a bachelors of management at the university I went to, which they have now swapped to a traditional bachelor of business Admin with a major in General Management.

I'm trying to figure out if a PMP designation would be overkill. Since we went through  things like Agile, Waterflow.

I work in mid management for tech (but currently unemployed), so was wondering about the designation but what is the general consensus?

Thanks

It really comes down to the requirements (stated or otherwise) for roles you'd be applying for. These days, the lack of a PMP is more likely to cause your resume to be rejected for a cold application in specific industries and regions than it is to get you hired as it is a convenient weeding-out criterion for decision makers.

Your degree doesn't reflect a focus on project management whereas the PMP does. By itself, it won't help you, but assuming you have sufficient PM experience, it may.

HR departments and resume scanning algorithms aren't going to see your transcript when you apply, but they frequently look for specific key words and certifications like the PMP in your resume. It also indicates that you have practical experience instead of simply book-knowledge.

I earned mine after many years as a practicing PM with many different job titles primarily so that my resume shows I understand the industry standards, not just the way we did things at my former employers. I didn't learn much new at that point, but I made my credentials more portable.

From my end, I believe the PMP would definitely be an asset for you and not an overkill at all.
