Has the initial hype around AI in project management subsided?

As AI has rapidly evolved and become more accessible, its potential to revolutionize project management has been widely discussed. However, the initial fervor surrounding AI may have given way to a more nuanced understanding of its capabilities and limitations.

Are project managers still as enthusiastic about and ready to explore AI as they were a few years ago? Have the practical challenges and complexities of implementing AI in real-world projects tempered the initial hype?

Dr. Deepa, this is a thought-provoking question. From my experience, the initial hype around AI in project management has indeed become more nuanced over time. When AI first gained attention, many viewed it as a panacea for all project management challenges. However, as we've seen AI's practical applications, we've also become more aware of its limitations.

AI is certainly powerful, especially in areas like predictive analytics, risk management, and resource optimization. However, implementing AI in real-world projects often involves significant challenges, including data quality, the need for domain-specific customization, and integration with existing processes.

That said, I don't think enthusiasm has entirely subsided—it's more that project managers have developed a more realistic and strategic approach to AI adoption. Instead of expecting AI to replace the human element, many now see it as a valuable tool that can augment decision-making and streamline routine tasks. In short, the initial hype has matured into a more balanced perspective where AI is viewed as an enabler rather than a silver bullet.

Yes but we should be sure that when the practical challenges and complexities of implementing AI are minimized we will be more willing and interested in it’s use in the years to come.

Has the hype subsided? What hype? AI Tools are here to stay, so PMI's efforts to document best practices are deeply appreciated. I use AI every day in my PM work. It's instrumental in stakeholder management and buffering my "email bitch voice."

I would suspect we are between waves of hype. IT companies are investing big in AI so there are bigger things to come.

I look at it like the advent of the home PC. At first they were very exciting. Then when most people realized they weren't going to learn coding, the PC became a better typewriter and calculator for many, and a gaming platform for most.

I'm sure there will be a new surge in enthusiasm as AI can perform more functions autonomously, but the danger with that is also that more people will trust that the answers are correct, and we've all heard about people driving into lakes using Google maps.

We are using AI in project management from more than 40 years ago. Sometimes without being aware on that. Just if you are talking about generative AI then complexity has been added because all related to responsible AI and new roles that must be defined into each initiative.
