At my company references are only given to confirm start and finish date, and perhaps job title. We compensate by holding assessment tests and further rounds of interviews.

As an employee, till now I have been associated with many MNCs in India and abroad. I used to provide both the Contact Nos. as well as Email addresses of my references during my selection process. But , I think no verification had been made from the Employers' end in any case. What I believe is that in case of any doubt on a candidate only , the Employers contact the Referees. In some occasions of my selection , I needed to provide the Organization Chart or Organogram of my previous Company at least upto my Reporting Boss.
