PMI's 2024 Summit - thoughts?

Did you attend the PMI Summit in LA this year? The sessions and networking were awesome, weren't they?

While on the flight back from LA to Halifax last week, I found myself pondering the many years I have spent with PMI since 1999: LIMS, LIVPMs, LIMC 2015 (go frogs!), Congresses, Conferences, Summits and training, and all of the teams and committees I have felt honoured to have been a part. I think of how it has helped me in my career, and how I have been able to give back to the profession in so many ways, first in technology, then communities, then standards, and now the PMO area.

It has been a blast and I tell anyone who will listen how they MUST get involved with PMI as a professional and as a volunteer. It is a soapbox I share with many PMI friends and colleagues.

But when all is said and done, it is that global network of friends and colleagues I look forward to seeing through the year, sometimes in person, sometimes virtually, that provides the most incredible value of all and keeps me coming back, time and again.

What do you think? Are you involved as a volunteer?  If not, well....

Get your PMI on!

Mike Frenette -

While I definitely agree with the networking and virtual connection benefits, when it comes to volunteering, having done it since 1999 myself, I do perceive a greater shift in the balance when working with Global HQ to benefits for them vs. myself. For sure, there is an element of jadedness and "familiarity breeds contempt" after so much time, but where there's smoke, there's fire.

I find that the sweet spot for a balanced relationship was in the late 2000s to the early 2010s...

I've raised this with a number of PMI folks, as has Rami Kaibni, and given my impending retirement (year end), I am going to significantly trim back my ongoing volunteering with PMI.

Kiron Bondale: Why did you poke the bear?

Mike Frenette: I completely agree about the networking benefits, and I truly enjoy volunteering. I can’t express enough how many volunteering activities I’m currently involved in with PMI, alongside my full-time job and side gig.

That said, I share Kiron’s concerns regarding the shift in balance. Despite having raised this issue multiple times with key PMI Team Members, I’ve noticed an increasing imbalance. There seems to be a persistent bias toward a select group of volunteers who frequently receive recognition, invitations to events, and other benefits.

I don’t want to come across as negative, but I believe it’s crucial to provide transparent and honest feedback as long as it stays within ethical and professional boundaries.

I have to say that there were two keynote addresses that were stellar (Robogals and Nothing Impossible) that were inspiring and motivational.

There were multiple sessions on PMOs that were also really great yielding information that I can put to immediate use. The PMO "sample uncon" was very good, and a nice preview of the PMO Uncon in Istanbul in December.

I won't say anything about the PMO panel entitled "The Making of a PMO Leader: Insights from Top-Notch Professionals" since I was on it, but the feedback was good.

Surprised no one noticed the typo in the title - 2014 instead of 2024! Trying to find out how to edit it!
