In your opinion, what is the MOST important thing that people who want to develop their career within the project management field really NEED to know?

You mean "the silver bullet"; it's the one thing all PMs want to know to help them advance in their career?

The answer is...it depends but all PMs where ever they are in their career path should know that they NEED....

To invest in themselves by using a personal growth and development plan with goals, objectives and action plans to meet career target milestones that they review often and update with input from their mentor, coach and/or sponsor.

You can't manage what you don't measure including your career. All PMs are a work in progress and a PDP will help you track your progress to achieve your goals and objectives

Hi Dino,

It depends on the specifics of the project and career path. There are commonalities regardless of sector:

1) Stay current on new developments / topics in the field of interest
2) Stay current with project management techniques, discussions, new developments
3) Get and remain certified in Project Management
4) Invest time in one's own skills and development

Cheers,
Joanna

Good question. I am taiking this topic's emphasis on developing the career, - so for an existing successful PM wanting to move up to more senior positions, larger projects etc. In my experience there are three core needs that will arise; how to manage staff, how finance works, and most importantly how to communicate.successfully with people at all levels. As a junior pm you do not tend to have much contact with senior execs, but as you work on larger projects you must be able to work successfully with everybody. I would particularly emphasise clear succinct verbal communication as the priority.

I would say communication skills. These will help at any point in your career (as will the emotional intelligence to apply them effectively).
