When you first started managing projects, what do you wish you had known then that you know now?

When I managed my first project, I wish I had known the history of undercurrents among the various people and stakeholders involved.

How about you? What do you wish you had known when you first started out?

Interesting question. Reflecting back to move forward is important. Everyone's journey into project management is different; did I pick PM as a career? No, I will say that today I share my journey with new PMs, engage with my community and am an advocate of advancing the profession one project manager at a time.

I wish I had known lots of things: that many people need chasing up more than I think they do, that communication and teamwork is important and will catch you out massively when it goes wrong (so don't let that happen) and most importantly, when you've got a common vision and clear goals, actually it is pretty easy to bring everyone along with you.

Elizabeth -

I think that's what surprised me the most, as well, in my first experience managing a project. I think I just assumed everyone would "do their job" and meet the deadline - or if there was an issue they would bring it to my attention. I learned the hard way that no one was reading my emails and that they had other priorities!

I think, the failure in my initial projects would have been much lower if, I knew, the art of Listening. But, guess, the failure has made the Learning skills much more substantial and sustainable
