How do you decide what methodology to use for a project opportunity?

We could, possibly, have a decision which could guide the most preliminary decision over the choice of methodology.
1. If the Root cause and/or solution for the project opportunity are known then use PMI OR PRINCE2 based methodology.
2. If Root cause and/or solution is unknown that it could be a Lean and/or Six Sigma opportunity hence DFSS, DMADV, DMAIC, Lean could be used

How's about using DSDM Atern? I've been looking into this methododlgy recently and am liking what I see. Has anyone else had experience of this? I'd welcome any views.

Very good point raised Tim. I have not used the methodology in my projects yet but have heard and read about the success stories. IS applicable some specific kinds of project situations/demands?

DSDM Atern is an agile approach so would also work well where you don't know all the requirements upfront and need to use an iterative approach. Otherwise, I think your split is quite fair.
