Agile delivery model supports small, collocated, if possible, so that the communication, collaboration and learning maintains and grows. Has anybody had an experience of using the large, distributed teams and made use of effective and efficient tools and process to get the similar results as the small, collocated teams would have produced?

I wrote a paper on this exact topic for ProjectsAtWork. You can access it here: Agile Distributed Teams.
In short, you can do it and the paper includes some interesting examples and stories from people and businesses who have made it work.

Thank you Elizabeth for the link to the paper on Agile Distributed Team. It has a lot of very interesting facts on agile and good recommendations on overcoming the challenges from a distributed team.

In our company, we have developers from South Africa and Australia. I am here in Canada(head office). As you can see, collaborating between three regions is tough with time zone differences.
