I have been working in the medical device industry for 10 years. Are there any recommendations for how to gain entry into a new industry? Saving Changes...

Hi Michele,
I have been in your boat before. Project management is a transferable skill I believe. Having domain knowledge in the projects you manage is a huge advantage but I wouldn't say it's a show stopper for you to move sideways. As long as you can demonstrate your PM skills and determination to learn the new products and processes I think you will be fine to move.
You can also try volunteering which I found rewarding and also helpful in this situation.
Cheers

Hi Michele,
Getting into a new industry can be tough, but it's not impossible - - I went from being a criminal defense attorney to a community manager in the pet industry and now a community manager in the PM industry!
I think it will be easier for you as a PM because regardless of the industry, the management skills stay the same - it's just a matter of subject area and maybe some differences in processes.
Here are a few actions that helped me make the transition:
1. Start reading blogs/etc. on topics in the new industry - get familiar with the terms people use, the type of people who are working in that industry (if it's no longer doctors/sales/etc, who is it now?)
2. Follow the major companies that are in that industry on their social channels. What are they sharing? What are the biggest issues/problems the companies face right now? How does PM fit in?
3. When you follow the companies on LinkedIn, check to see if you have any connections to the companies -- can you spend some time with some of the connections to get a feel of whether you would enjoy working in that new industry?
4. Are there any meetups or networking events in that new industry that you can attend for free? It's a good way to get a feel for the atmosphere.
That's just a few ideas off of the top of my head - if I can think of any more I'll come back and post. Please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn especially if you'd like to chat offline.
